‘‘Imagine a world where we all view each other through the lens of compassion rather than judgement… and imagine viewing yourself through that same lens…That’s the world I want to live in.’’

– Siân Goodspeed

Hello! I’m Siân.

I believe that the key to healing the world is compassionate connection…and the power to do so lies within each and every one of us.

What’s required is a shift in how we communicate: a shift from jackal to giraffe.

You see, most of us have been trained to speak the language of jackal: to judge, blame, criticise and demand. - It’s so deeply embedded into our society that we’re often unaware we’re speaking it.

The problem with jackal language is that it breeds misunderstanding, frustration, shame and anger. It causes division between humans, leading to arguments, conflict and war.

The good news is, once we’re aware of our jackal ways, we can choose a more connected, compassionate way of communicating: we can learn the language of giraffe. And, crucially, our children will learn to speak ‘giraffe’ too!

As we transform how we communicate with those around us, we will bring more harmony and peace into our homes.

And, as more of us make this transformation in our own lives, we will collectively tip the balance into a new paradigm of living from the heart.

If you dream of a more compassionate, peaceful world, I invite you to join me on a journey into communicating from the heart…

Compassionate Parenting Course

As loving parents, we all aspire to communicate with our children in a calm, compassionate manner…so why does it often go so wrong?!

Giraffe or jackal?

We all have a giraffe and a jackal inside us. In any given situation, we may choose to listen to and respond from either our giraffe or our jackal.

Why the name?

The giraffe is the symbol of compassionate communication. For me, this image embodies the characteristics of the type of person I aspire to be: calm, loving, patient and kind. The phrase, “Be more giraffe!” is my daily mantra: it’s what I say to myself as a gentle reminder to step into my giraffe skin when I get up in the morning.

It also just so happens that giraffes are my favourite animal. I have always loved their ungainly elegance, their beautiful big eyes and their gorgeous long eye lashes. They have an air of kindness and serenity about them that I’ve always been drawn to.

Whenever I visit a wildlife park, it’s always the giraffes I rush to see first. Back in 2002 when I had the privilege of going on an African safari, it wasn’t the ‘Big Five’ I was interested in – I just wanted to see the giraffes (and there were a lot of them!) When I’m in the presence of giraffes, I feel total and utter joy. So it seemed fitting that the giraffe would take the leading role in this project.
